When To Upgrade Your Hard Drive

The hard drive on your computer is where long term data is stored. It consists of files, photos, videos, music, downloads, application preferences, drivers for your devices, and coding for your operating system and network, etc. The hard drive is often referred to as computer storage and has a few different options you can consider when it is time to upgrade.

How do you know it’s time to upgrade your hard drive? One of the main things to consider is performance. If the device is not moving fast enough for you and you want more speed, then upgrading the hard drive is a quick, cost effective way to give it a performance boost. If your computer is booting slower or failing to boot this can be a sign of hard drive failure. If your hard drive is making grinding, clicking or scratching sounds, this is a sign of pending hard drive failure as the drive is struggling to rotate. Other signs to look out for are long pauses when opening files, files being unreadable, files disappearing, your pc randomly freezing, blue screen errors, hard disk not being detected or disk errors appearing from applications or the operating system.

When looking for a replacement drive, there are generally three things to check for: physical size, speed and space. Drives typically come in three physical sizes: 3.5”, 2.5” and M.2. If you are looking for the fastest and most reliable solution, then solid state drives are the way to go and are available in all physical sizes. If you are in a situation where you are running out of space you would want to ensure you are purchasing a larger drive that will meet your needs. Drives typically come in 250 GB, 500 GB, 1TB OR 2 TB space capacities.

Before replacing the hard drive always run a disk check, virus/malware check and backup your files, if possible. If the problem is truly the hard drive then it should be replaced as soon as possible. Your options for upgrading will depend on your computer and the interface it uses (SATA vs. PCIe). There are many options out there and we understand that choice can be overwhelming.
