There are several reasons why you should be keeping all of your devices up to date. Rather it be mobile phones, tablets or computers, updates are sent for security, stability, and new features. To a lot of us, updates may seem inconvenient, or we may have had a bad experience with a previous update that had bugs or a change of features or design that we didn’t like. While that is understandable, the updates are still ultimately there to help keep you safe and keep your device operating at its best.
The biggest reason you should install updates regularly is for security. Hackers and criminals are always looking for various loopholes or vulnerabilities in software and applications to gain access to your personal information. Security updates serve the purpose of fixing those loopholes and vulnerabilities to prevent hackers and criminals from accessing your device. If you don’t update your device, you will be susceptible to an attack that could unnecessarily compromise your information. Information that is typically compromised can include but is not limited to financial information, login credentials, and tracking information.
The second reason you should install updates regularly is for stability. While developers (the individuals that build and create software and applications) spend a lot of time in perfecting their software, it is not perfect when it is first released. Over the course of time, developers may notice bugs or may receive feedback regarding issues that customers are facing. At times, the bugs can be relatively minor, and other times they can actually threaten the integrity of your device. You can always check the severity of the bugs in the section labeled, “update details”. If it is minor, you will usually see verbiage similar to minor bug fixes and improvements. Ultimately, stability improvements keep your device running smoothly as it was designed to.
The last reason you should install updates regularly is for the ability to use new features. Over time, improvements are made that can increase productivity and can make your workflow more simple. These enhancements can really change the way you use your device as a whole as they can change the design, integrations, sharing abilities, shortcuts, automations, etc. If you are used to doing things a certain way and don’t want to lose a particular feature, always check the update details section for more information.
On most devices you do have the option to install updates automatically. This will handle things behind the scenes for you, and will typically just prompt you if you need to restart your device. However, as mentioned above, if you are particular about how you use your device you may want to check manually to ensure you will not be losing any features that you are familiar with. To check to see how your updates are being delivered, navigate to your settings on your device and modify it if necessary. As always, we are here to help you and please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.
